Key Monastery – Lahaul - Spiti Tour - Buddhism in Himachal Pradesh - Buddhist Tour

KEY MONASTERY: is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery located on top of a hill having height of 4,166 meters in the Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh. It is also named as Ki or Kye or Kee monastery.

Key monastery is one of the biggest monasteries located in Spiti Valley. Kye Gompa is founded by Dromton, a pupil of the famous teacher, Atisha in the 11th century. The walls of monastery are covered with paintings and murals, representing monastic architecture of 14th century. This monastery has numerous ancient murals and books which includes images of Buddha. There are three floors in this monastery. The first one is used for storage. Second one is called Tangyur which is painted with many murals. The ground floor is beautifully decorated Assembly Hall and cells for monks.


Key Monastery is over 10000-years-old and the oldest religious training centre for Lamas.

The valley of the Himalayas hold the treasures and secrets of ancient civilizations. Monastic traditions developed enormous architectural marvels and perhaps in no other society does religion play such a defining role in the political and economic.
