Sanchi Stupa - Great Stupa Sanchi - UNESCO Site in Madhya Pradesh - Ashoka Pillar - Buddhist Complex

The Sanchi stupa is Buddhist complex renowned for its scriptures & Great Stupa located on a hilltop at Sanchi Town in Madhya Pradesh. This stupa was built in 283 BCE by King Ashoka, a famed Indian emperor later converted to Buddhism. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and second largest stupa in India after Amravati.

This stupa is 46 km far from Bhopal, capital city of Madhya Pradesh, popular for varied temples and numerous national parks. Madhya Pradesh is also famous for UNESCO world heritage site Khajuraho- A Group of Monuments and group of Hindu and Jain temples.

Sanchi stupa is surrounded with four carved gateways facing towards all four sides. Whole complex area is blessed with picturesque natural beauty. The use of lotus in architecture of stupa rises to people from mud of materialism to reality and spirituality of life.



It is oldest stone structure in India and is holy shrines and monasteries of Lord Buddha reflecting jewel of Buddhist art and architecture. Sanchi is center of a region hosting many numbers of stupas as Satdhara, Morel Khurd, Andher, Mawas and Sonari. Ashoka Pillar is one of the topmost tourist attractions of Sanchi situated near southern gateway of stupa and was build in the 3rd century B.C. This pillar built up with a shaft and a crown of four lions.

Best timing to visit Sanchi Stupa is from October to April.
